The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) National Center of Excellence in Women's Health (COE) is one of six national centers designated by the Office on Women's Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The UCSF CoE is using a five-pronged approach to improve women's health through a multi-disciplinary and multi-departmental model which recognizes the interdependence of research , clinical care, leadership, education and community. The UCSF CoE is committed to developing partnerships with individuals and organizations to foster and support activities geared toward improving the health and well-being of women and girls across diverse communities. Research

The CoE recognizes that UCSF has a rich research environment and seeks to facilitate collaboration between existing programs and to stimulate new research by: creating a comprehensive UCSF Women's Health Research Directory; formulating a Women's Health Research Agenda; developing a Step-by-Step Recruitment Manual to enhance the inclusion of diverse women into research studies; sponsoring events and using media to increase dissemination of research finding' developing cross-campus collaborations with other Bay Area institutions; and hosting "Bench-to-Bedside" forums.

Clinical Care

The four clinical sites of the UCSF CoE which comprise UCSF Women's Health offer a broad range of primary care and Ob/Gyn services for women across the life span. The Center is working to enhance its existing services through the Mental Health Project.

Education

The CoE recognizes that long-term changes in the health care for women will occur only with the translation of new research findings into new curricula under which providers are trained to care for women. The CoE is designing a Model Medical School Curriculum.

Leadership

A priority of the Center is to increase the number of women in leadership positions. The Center is formulating a Leadership Plan to enhance the recruitment, retention and promotion of women in academic medicine. In addition, the CoE has an active Internship Program for high school, college, graduate, and medical students who are interested in women's health.

Community

The UCSF CoE strives to maintain and build bridges to women in the community and the providers who serve them through its Community Network Project. The CoE hosts ongoing community events, often in partnership with community agencies. The CoE is also committed to identifying and developing patient education materials for women which are up-to-date, culturally sensitive and translated into several languages.

Current as of February 2005
